What’s Topic and Category Community?
Communities play a significant role within Oracle Fusion Cloud Learn. We’ve already delved into Self-Service Community and Official Community. Now, we’re turning our attention to Topic Community and Category Community. These two community types serve distinct purposes, as they are designed to organize learning items in a more structured manner, making it simpler for learners to access their desired content. For instance, on our website, we’ve categorized articles into two main categories: Functional Articles and Technical Articles, each containing various topics like Oracle Learning Cloud and Oracle Recruiting Cloud etc.
Category Community serves as a means to classify learning content into broader logical groups, while Topic Community is employed to create specific topics within a Category Community. These communities are visible to learners on the Oracle Learning Cloud Landing page. In this article, we will provide a hands-on demonstration of configuring and utilizing Category Community and Topic Community.
Learn to Configure Category Community
Navigation : My Client Groups » Learning » Learning Catalog » Communities
On the Communities page scroll below to Search Results section and click on Create button, select option Category Community, which will take you to Create Learning Community page.
In the Learning Community section, enter details as follows
- Community Name : Soft Skills
- Branding Image : Upload an image < you may use this one https://i.postimg.cc/ZRkPvN2p/ss.jpg >
- Description : Soft skills are personal attributes and interpersonal qualities that enhance your ability to communicate, work, and interact effectively with others. These skills encompass a wide range of abilities, including communication, teamwork, adaptability, leadership, and emotional intelligence.
Scroll below to User Privacy Settings section and enter details as follows
- Privacy : Open
- Member Contribution : Disable <this is the default value you can’t change it>
Click on Submit button. This will take you to Soft Skills : Learning Community page. On your left hand side you will see following options
- Definition
- Catalog
- Administrator conversation
- Membership
We will cover the usability of these options later, but for now lets us create one more category community. Click on back arrow button to return to Communities page.
Click on Create button again and and select option Category Community. Create a new community as follows
- Community Name : Technical Skills
- Branding Image : Upload an image < you may use this one https://i.postimg.cc/KcQ2fDfG/ts.jpg >
- Description : Technical skills refer to a specific set of practical, hands-on abilities and knowledge related to a particular field or profession. Technical skills can range from computer programming, data analysis, and graphic design to mechanical engineering, carpentry, and medical procedures. Developing and staying updated on technical skills is essential to remain competitive and proficient in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.
- Privacy : Open
- Member Contribution : Disable <this is the default value you can’t change it>
Click on Submit button. Click on Back arrow button to return to Communities page.
Make Community Category Featured (Optional)
While you are still on Communities page, search for the category community we just created one by one and make them featured by clicking on Add to Feature button.
Learn to Configure Topic Community
Navigation : My Client Groups » Learning » Learning Catalog » Communities
While you are still on Communities page, click on Create button and this time select option Topic Community. This will take you to same familiar Create Learning Community page. Enter details as follows on this page.
- Community Name : Leadership Skills
- Branding Image : Upload an image
- Description : Leadership skills encompass a wide range of abilities and qualities that enable individuals to effectively guide, inspire, and influence others in achieving common goals or objectives. These skills are essential for individuals in leadership roles, such as managers, supervisors, team leaders, or anyone aspiring to lead others. Leadership skills include effective communication, decision-making, problem-solving, delegation, empathy, and the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
- Privacy : Open
- Member Contribution : Disable <this is the default value you can’t change it>
- Enable following checkboxes in the Comments section.
- Override conversation system setup configuration
- Enable conversations for self service users on the catalog page
- You can also optionally upload related materials in the Related Materials section.
Click on Submit button. This will take you to Leadership Skills : Learning Community page. On your left hand side, you will see following options
- Definition
- Catalog
- Administrator conversation
- Self-Service Conversation
- Membership
Learn to Add Learning Items to Topic Community
While you are on Leadership Skills : Learning Community page, click on the Catalog option and click on Add Learning Item button. Select option Search and Select. On the pop-up page, search for the learning items you think are related to Leadership Skills, for learning purpose you can elect any random items you have configured earlier such as Digital Marketing Fundamentals or Email Marketing.
Once done, click on Back arrow button to return to Communities page.
Create Additional Topic Community
We need few more Topic Community to explain the concept clearly, please create few more Topic Community as described below, keep all other field as explained previously (like attaching image, Privacy Settings and then attaching few related learning items as per the topic name)
Community Name | Description |
Teamwork | Teamwork is a crucial skill that involves collaborating effectively with others to achieve common goals. It encompasses communication, cooperation, and the ability to work harmoniously within a group. Strong teamwork skills involve actively listening to others, contributing ideas, resolving conflicts, and being reliable and supportive. |
Time Management | Time management is a fundamental skill that involves efficiently organizing and utilizing one’s time to maximize productivity and achieve objectives. It encompasses various strategies and techniques for prioritizing tasks, setting goals, and effectively allocating time to different activities. Effective time management helps individuals meet deadlines, reduce stress, and enhance overall efficiency. |
Programming Languages | Programming languages are essential tools for software development and computer programming. They are sets of instructions used to create software, websites, mobile apps, and more. Proficiency in programming languages is a fundamental technical skill for software developers and engineers. |
Generative AI | Generative AI, short for Generative Artificial Intelligence, is a cutting-edge field within artificial intelligence that focuses on developing algorithms and models capable of creating new data, content, or information. Unlike traditional AI, which is typically used for tasks like classification or prediction, generative AI aims to generate entirely novel outputs. |
Oracle Cloud Application | Oracle Cloud Application refers to a suite of cloud-based software solutions offered by Oracle Corporation to help businesses streamline their operations and improve productivity. These applications cover a wide range of functions, including customer relationship management (CRM), enterprise resource planning (ERP), human capital management (HCM), supply chain management (SCM), and more. |
Link Topic Community With Category Community
With this we have created 6 Topic Community and 2 Category Community, we next need to group these topic communities under category community as described in the table below.

Assuming you are still on Communities page, search for the first category community we created earlier i.e Soft Skills.
- Click on the community name to open it.
- Click on Catalog option.
- Click on Add Learning Item
- Select option Search and Select
- Her you will be able to search all Topic Communities we created earlier, search and select following three topic communities
- Time Management
- Teamwork
- Leadership Skills
- Click on Add button, you will be back to Learning Community page where three topics are added.
Click on the Back arrow button to return to Communities page. Follow the steps mentioned above to update the Technical Skills category community to add following three topic community.
- Programming Languages
- Generative AI
- Oracle Cloud Application
Make Topic Category Featured (Optional)
Similar to Category community, you can feature Topic community also. You can do it through the usual steps mentioned earlier, or you can do it from inside category community also. While Technical Skills : Learning Community page is open click on the three dots for Generative AI topic community and select option Add to Featured, you can also follow this step to remove a topic community from category community.
